Reading Response: Jane
In this book the
storyline starts with Jane, the main character, spending her last few nights at
the East Coast College of her dreams. She is forced to drop out of school mid
semester and move back home because she has just received word that her parents
have been killed in an accident. With this unexpected twist of events that has
turned Jane’s world completely upside down she is left homeless, unemployed,
and nearly broke. Realizing that she will have nowhere to stay in less than
thirty-six hours, she begins the ultimately unsuccessful search for a job. She
begins to lose hope and question her own life after no luck with the job search
that is until she discovers Discriminating Nannies, Inc.
“I sat in the chair closest to the exit, where I felt like
an impostor in my herringbone suit from Goodwill, so I could watch as the
competition came and went” (Page: 1)
“The
woman quickly sized me up. I could see it in her sharp eyes and closed mouth
smile: I was a parody of a nanny, too fussily, all wrong.” (Page: 2)
When I first read these
lines one question continually came to mind. Why are we as humans so quick to
conform to the standards set by today’s society? We are not meant to be
uniform, flawless, or perfect. If that’s the case then we should all have been
made in a factory overseas and shipped over like the latest version of
technology. Imagine if everyone could do the exact same thing at the same skill
level. The world would become a very boring place and it would be hard for any
improvements to be made. We all have a purpose and we are all made different
for a reason. So the next time someone tries to alter who you are follow these
three rules: be honest, be proud, and most importantly BE YOU!
That's a really great opinion on individuality I wish more people would think like that it would open peoples eyes to a world with much less judgmental people.
